AOL 6 Revisited: Is It Fixed Yet? Written by: Dan Daily
Hi Gang! Long time no see. Sorry about that, I took "Danny's Daily's" to the web. Check out my main site, and see the new issues. Really nice, I'm very proud of it... Today, we're going to talk about the CD version of AOL 6. Taking Danny's Daily's to the web, has caused feedback from my normal readers. Many of them have AOL 6, and "claim" they have no problems, but have tons of them. Gang, it's not my servers: It's YOU! I've gotten tons of mail asking about the CD version. OK, here it is, and you won't like it.
First!!!! These tests were done on my brand new Compaq 5004US. That's a 1.1gighrtz Athlon Thunderbird processor, 256megs of ram, a TNT 3-D video card with 16megs. AOL DSL/500k connection. Nothing running except the Windows Resource Meter; Systray; My Mouse; Explorer; and Windows Me. This thing is so fast, there is no way to describe it! I just wish the women I know were 1/10th as fast!!! .
Are you ready? I couldn't even get the AOL DSL software to even load. This is on AOL 5! I had to call. It was causing an endless loop on installing. The WinPoet software, (the connection between AOL, and the DSL Driver) was an old version. You had to go in "safe" mode, and uninstall AOL from there to even release the computer. Great Start! They had me put in 6, told me I'd have to beta test, "nothing works with Me." Great, what did I buy here? The computer would go before my DSL, Believe Me! Anyway, I got 6 on the DSL running slower then a 56k modem.
Then I Remembered! I had the new Verizon AOL 5 Setup software. It has the new version of Winpoet. (remember, I've always told you to save your setup files.) So I transferred it to this machine and installed it. Waa Laa! There are no words to describe it. I uninstalled 6. Then your letters started coming in about the CD version of 6. So, here's what I did. I Backed up to a second hard drive; no more zip drives, and hours to screw around with it. This baby had me backed up in less then 5 minutes! After it was all there, I unplugged the second drive! (Taking no chances here.) And installed AOL 6 from the CD. Forget the DSL software. After 5 tries, nothing... What the Hell! I tried my AOL 5 DSL and it wouldn't work. JUST GREAT! So I ran to the network/Internet adapter files to have a look. I wish I hadn't........
The Internet Adapter Files. She would run off the modem, but nothing else; and only in AOL 6. 5 was long gone. When I visited the adapters, I had about 6 new ones. My file sharing buttons were frozen. (grayed out) I don't know if it enabled file sharing or not. The entire section in Windows was locked out! And yes, I tried uninstalling AOL 6, they were all still there. I reinstalled AOL 5, no change, and 5 wouldn't run at all. It wouldn't let me manually delete them. OMG! I don't believe this! So that's what you people who wrote, meant! So yes baby, SYSTEM WIPE CITY!!! Here We Come!!! Forget AOL 6 gang. It ruined my first computer, and it literally WASTED my brand new one! No Shit!!! But 6 would run on a modem, so I checked it out. Hey, I was cool; had it all on another drive, just a procedure. So I'm online: The first thing I realize, is I'd give up the net all together, if I lost my DSL. Really! It got my address book right. (first time) But I deleted it right away. My lists have thousands of addresses that are none of AOL's business. The email had the right fonts for a change. It still won't send HTML email. And it still won't do "mailto; subject email."
Mailto; Subject Email This is email, that starts as a hot link. My sites are full of them. If you sign up for Danny's Daily's, the subject line automatically says "subscribe from your site." I know exactly where that link came from; or "comments from your site," I know where that one is. I have about 30 different ones. AOL 6 email is blank, so all I get is "no subject." And most of you don't fill in a subject, or the right one. As a result, I have no idea what you want! AOL? Screw You!!! You are disrupting millions of emails because of this and you know it! Every email system in the WORLD!!! Supports mailto; subject lines! All AOL versions do except for AOL 6! Sometimes you really piss me off! I find it ironic that the very thing almost every list server on the Internet uses for subscribes, is what you no longer support. Are you that insecure AOL?
So, that's all I needed to know Gang. Still no support for subject based emails, still can't send HTML email, and it wasted my entire system. It took a system, that was getting 385 to 480k connection speeds on AOL5, on AOL DSL. Running perfectly fine. AND WASTED IT!!! I had to wipe the entire drive to be able to get my DSL back.
There is more; like the fact that it took forever to get to a web site, if it did it at all; but I don't think anymore needs be said. It's still in beta testing as you may or may not know. It' been out for, let's see, going on 4 months now? And it's worse to me now, then it was then.
Remember! I don't support AOL 6, and after this episode, I will never install it again, so DON'T ASK! YOU AIN'T WORTH IT! Never again. In all the years I've beta tested, I've never had a program; ANY PROGRAM! Make me wipe my drive. And AOL 6? Not once, not twice, but three times, and this makes FOUR and it's NOT BETA SOFTWARE!!! Forget it already. I like having my computer scream. I like seeing my web site pop up in four seconds! That's it for me. You asked, I tried: End of discussion. And as usual, You decide if you want it. Just don't go crying to me. And if you're having trouble getting to my sites, or they load slow, or only half load and freeze up. It's not me or my servers, it's that wonderful AOL6 that you just had to have!
A SECRET For those of you that don't know it. AOL 5 is on every AOL 6 CD. If you are set up to see hidden files, you'll see the folder on the CD. To do this, go to "My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/View, and check the little circle "view hidden files." When you put the CD in the drawer, it'll start to install. Just exit. Then at "My Computer" right click on your CD drive, and left click "Explore." This will popup everything on the CD, and there is the AOL50 folder right there. In fact, you'll also see AOL 3 in there as well.
Conclusion: Those of you that have AOL 6 and don't think you're having any problems? Do yourself a favor, a test, if you will. Back Up your Data, wipe your drive, install AOL 5 and see if it doesn't make a big difference. I'm betting it will gang. And for those of you that have AOL DSL, and bought the line that you have to have 6 for Windows Me to work? The AOL5 DSL Verizon edition is's on the "Danny's Junk" CD. It works good. Really Good! So Stop being a Dream Weaver! Time to get it right!
I hope this helps you on your road. Your Road? Yes, Your Road To Computer Sanity Danny
