Danny; What's a Firewall? Do I Need One? Written by: Dan Daily
Hi Gang! Good to see you all again: Today we cover firewalls; what they are, and what they do. Last time, if you'll remember, I asked you to review "Are You Secure On The Internet" and "Your Computer is Spying On You." If you haven't, you really need to do that now. You need to know all your "Spyware" is gone. This is the Final Chapter in Internet Security! Utilizing all the tools I've given you; after today, you will have total Internet security! And The "Hero" is YOU! .
What's a Firewall Anyway? All right, picture it this way. All a firewall is; is a filter between you and the Internet. If you have Aol6, read the previous article on Aol6 Security. Aol6 Security; Is AOL Spying on You? A firewall will not protect you from a connection you told the firewall to make. I will tell you; that a good firewall can tell you every time Aol pings you; and they do: But that's from the net. File sharing is something Aol6 setup, and that's internal. There is no ping! You have to fix it. A good firewall will also monitor your network, but why allow the problem to occur in the first place? A firewall protects you against everything else. Period. At least the firewall I'm offering you today. The firewall acts to filter anything and everything coming to your computer from the Internet, and everything the other way around. It prevents all contact not authorized by you. And, as usual, sometimes the best software is free. You just have to look, I have; and this is the best firewall for any price!
A Little More; You must realize that your Internet connection is in and out. To and from the net. Your firewall monitors both sides of this equation! So, if it's something on the Internet trying to get you: Or, if it's your very own computer trying to get to the net. Yes! Your very own computer, and yes, it's legal. The New Windows XP only does half of this equation! It's a piece of sh*t! Listen UP! If you didn't know that? Then read on: Whether it's "Spyware," or programs you have trying to upgrade themselves, you should know what it is, and with Zone Alarm, you absolutely will know what's going on. Zone Alarm does even more than that.
Zone Alarm Zone Alarm, is free for personal use. It is by far the best firewall. New tests just invented; it passed with flying colors. Also, it was the only one that did. Black Ice is vulnerable. So, this is your lucky day. Download this into one of your personal folders, so you won't forget where you put it. After it's installed, it will turn on when you boot up, it'll be a tray icon. Use the default settings; The first thing you'll notice: As soon as you go on to the Internet on Aol, you get a notice that jumps up and asks you if you want to allow Aol access to the Internet. And so it goes; it learns as it goes, and you can see your list at the click of a button. Please, be advised, you must run Ad Subtract and get rid of ALL your Spyware. It will drive you crazy, because it's your computer trying to get out that is most prevalent in the beginning. You have to batten down the hatches so to speak. Once Zone Alarm is taught, you don't even know it's there. That is until you get pinged from the net. Zone Alarm even has a "more information" button so you can trace who pinged you. REALLY..... It's a great program! Zone Alarm also will monitor your network, if you have one. If not, you'll only use half of it. That adds up to FOUR times the power of the new Windows XP built in firewall.
If you'd like to check your Internet security, as usual, you came to the right place! I can even offer that for you. For FREE! I would suggest checking it now, then checking it with the firewall. Aol is pretty good all by itself, it'll be random pings that you have to worry about, and they might be from Aol itself. As is my custom, in my never ending battle to give you the best, for Nothin: I've done it again. There is a site called "Shields Up." And it will put your computer through the ringer. And I do mean the ringer, it'll try ways just thought of by the best security people out there, to get through your security, and guess what; it won't when you have Zone Alarm running. End of discussion! They have no affiliation with Zone Alarm, by the way.

I hope this helps you on your road. Your Road? Yes, Your Road To Computer Sanity Danny .
("What are you looking at? Yes, I am 30 and a redhead, with 44D's, 26, 36. On AOL that is.")
Next time, I have something special for you! I think I'll call it "Quick Tips." Little things you can do with Windows, to make your life much easier! Stay Tuned Gang! It Will Be Great!
