When Only The Best!  Will Do...

Laughter is the Sun that Drives Winter from the Human Face.  Please Spread It Around...

Hi Gang,

Good Morning All!

"It Should Always Be Free!"

This written from a free site subscriber:

I wanted you to see this.  I have quite a few friends on your subscriber list ... no, not in your inner circle ... the ones that "take all your original stuff for free."  Since it mirrors all of our sentiments exactly, I thought you may want to see the other side of the coin.  I must point out, the writer is NOT a subscriber to your list....

The world of email publishing is going through a horrible time right now.  Email advertising revenue is gone into the dumper.  In some publications, the ad rates have dropped over 80%.  Much like the dot.com
failures, people are starting to figure out that dreams of hitting it rich on the web are just dreams.

In response to this slowdown some publishers have decided to try and implement a very risky solution.  They have begun to charge their subscribers to sign up for the publication.  Some are sold as subscriptions while others are more like joining a club.

If you join any discussion list on the net that is targeted at list owners, you will read an ongoing dialogue of how owners feel their hard work is not appreciated by their readers.  That they deliver valuable information and people should be happy to pay.  You can also read how indignant they get when they find out few are willing to
subscribe for a price.

All of this has got me thinking; What would you pay for this humor list?

Wait... What if I threw in a Ginsu knife?

As delusional as I can be at times, I have no illusion of getting paid by readers for this publication.  I know if I charged you I would have exactly 1 subscriber, and even then my wife would have to be convinced.

One of the great things about the web is the "Everything for free" attitude.  There is so much out there that can be had for no cost that paying for something online is almost offensive.  It's great for the
consumer but death to anyone trying to make an e-living.

So, unless there is a sudden influx of people mailing me checks, this publication will remain free.  We will continue to provide the very best entertainment that can be drudged up out of the murky depths of my mind.

My Reply:

Well, I suppose that's cute and all.  You certainly sent this letter to the right person:  I don't know anything about this guy or gal.  Perhaps you'll forward this on to whoever wrote this and, at least have the courtesy to send it to the many people who read it.

<<In response to this slowdown some publishers have decided to try and implement a very risky solution.>>

I don't understand your attitude on this:  Risky solution as opposed to what?  You're not getting paid now, just what are you risking?  Sanity?  Ego stroking?  Hey, you want to stroke your ego?  Have them pay for the service and want to!  That shows you have true value.  It's tangible, not a pipe dream.  That is success; not pushing out a rag for free.  Anyone can do that.

You'd only have one subscriber?  Perhaps that says more about the quality of your publication then it does the everything for free attitude that you're hiding behind.

I think, if what you say is true, you should throw in the towel now:  Obviously, either you don't think much about your own work, or you don't have the guts to take a chance, and like I said earlier; just what do you think your risking?  More time with your spouse and children?  Didn't you take a chance when you first started?  What's happened to you?

What would really be depressing is if you quit today; and get maybe 6 emails asking about you no matter how large your mailing list is.  The freeloaders wouldn't even notice:  Believe me, I've seen it happen to others hundreds of times.  Maybe you're right, maybe you don't matter...

The net is quickly going the way of cable systems.  It's it's only choice:  Your AOL is your basic service and any premium channels are extra.  GET USED TO IT! It's as simple as that.  Look around you and smell the roses.  Every free ISP is gone, free email accounts will soon be history; even Blue Mountain has to charge for online greeting cards.  WAKE UP PEOPLE!  Only on the web; you should get no commercials after you pay the price.

At least at my publications you don't.  In fact, my publications never had any ads at all ever!  Even on the free side!  You can't say that about anyone else can you?  I always believed, and still do; it's much easier to sell me, then some nameless faceless product I don't use.  I believe in me, much more then I believe in it; at least, I know I have integrity.

Maybe AOL really isn't worth 24 dollars a month just for access...  I, and many like me, are the reason that access even exists at all!  What do you think access means?  Access to product:  I, ladies and gentlemen, AM that product and take GREAT offense at this editor wannabe who wrote this gibberish!!!

I'm not talking about some silly here today and gone tomorrow email e-zine.  I'm talking THE WEB!  The REAL world out here:  Serious work, serious thought...

So, let's digest this, shall we?

When premium channels first came out on cable, they to, had a very slow acceptance rate.  Like cable; once people get used to it on the web, they'll have no other choice.  Either that, or all the "quality" web sites will keep doing what they're doing:  Disappear!  That's the only choice out there.  The sites that can't earn their keep will just dry up and blow away.

I say; BLOW AWAY!  You're clogging up my Internet!  I'm sorry the dot com boom ever happened!  It ruined our Internet!  This wouldn't even be happening!!!

As far as the subscription model not working?  The web porn industry is only seconded by the video porn industry as the largest money making machine in the world today.  And I do mean THE ENTIRE WORLD!

The subscription model does work and that proves it!

Whoever your are, or think you are, you're full of SHIT!

Are you telling me the only way to turn a dollar is porn?  Shame on you.  You, and people like you, disgust me...

If this is true, it's a VERY sad state of affairs on the Internet today...

And for those that think everything should be free except porn?  I have to believe your attitude isn't unique to the web.

Someone has to pay:  Why should I have to pay for you?  Don't try to hack my pay sites, stay away from my sites:  I'm not your welfare agency!  Get REAL!  When was the last time you did something for nothing for strangers?  EVER?  I've been giving smiles away for seven years to millions of souls.  What do you do?

I make no apologies to anyone!  Times change and so must I, or die...

I have to pay for my servers.  Every good site has to because of the immense amount of traffic that GOOD sites get.  I get 2 million hits a year and growing.  You want my time AND my money?  Perhaps a car, room and board are next?

Remember the old saying:  "Grass, Cash, or Ass; No One Rides For Free"?  Perhaps it time to junk the 300.00 e-machines and get off the web.  I say GO AWAY!  You're clogging up my Internet as well.

I've been in computers for over 20 years:  I've been on the web since before you even knew what "web" means.

Sound like an attitude?  You bet...
